After several years of strong growth, Rioned found that more space was needed. Project 2020 was initiated some time ago to fill in the details of the expansion plans. As described in a previous article, Project 2020 also includes an extension to Rioned’s test room.
Rioned sets high standards for the quality of its sewer jetting machines. We have our own test room and test protocols to ensure that each machine meets the relevant quality requirements. Every single machine is tested and checked extensively before delivery to the customer. We interviewed Kees van Giersbergen, Rioned's Production Manager, to find out more about the redesigned in-house test area and how Rioned guarantees optimum quality for its sewer jetting machines.
Since when has Rioned had its own test room?
“The test room was first built and commissioned when Rioned moved to the Centaurusweg site in Tilburg in 2001. We need this facility to subject all our machines to extensive testing. In the early days, the facility was only used for test-running the machines. In 2012, we added a high-tech test station in order to perform all kinds of in-depth testing. The test station is the result of a research project performed by engineering students at the University of Applied Sciences and is a completely tailor-made piece of equipment.
When this test station was put into operation, we also defined a number of test standards such as the maximum pressure and output in litres of water per minute. These standards specify the minimum level of performance expected of the machine. Obviously, you need the right measuring equipment to assess the machines against these standards.
The results of our test programme have already led to a number of improvements to the machines. The measurement results have helped us improve machine performance.’’
That sounds very professional. So why was a new test room required?
“Due to strong growth in recent years, the size of the test facility had become a limiting factor. And the working conditions in the old situation were no longer satisfactory, both in respect of the employees and the machines.
The test area has been expanded by adding a 125 m3 roofed space with a liquid-impermeable floor. You can only effectively test the machine for leaks in a dry environment. And offering our employees good working conditions is obviously the most important consideration.
Furthermore, the test area needed to be updated from environmental point of view, in line with our CSR objectives. We have added a system that recovers some of the test water for reuse at a later time.’’

What actually takes place in the test room?
“A test-run protocol has been prepared for each machine. This protocol specifies the target test values and all the points that require checking. After leaving production, the machine is filled with lubricant and coolant. Only then do we test-run the machine. All processes are performed and checked during the test run. For example, we test the drive system, fuel delivery capacity and check that all the pipes and connections are leak-free. The technician who assembles the machine in production is also responsible for testing the machine.
The entire test cycle takes about 2 hours to complete. After the test run, the machine is connected up to the test station and all the parameters are read and analysed. The station checks all the settings to ensure maximum output based on the machine’s capacity.’’
‘’At the end of this process, the machine goes back to the supervisor who performs a final check on specific safety aspects and obviously ensures that all the tests have been completed successfully. The next step is to register the machine's master data such as the type number and motor/pump number in our system.
All the machine data is stored in the system and also linked to the test data. This allows us to provide good after sales service. A sort of ‘medical record’ which we keep updated for all our machines.”
